１１人で一杯になる店。
それが彼女ひとりで、
うつくしく鰻を焼いてうっすら額に汗をかき、
けれど疲れずお客様のひとりひとりに目が配れる。
それがこの席数なんだと、
その大きさにずっとこだわり決して大きくしなかった。
昼は手軽な丼なんかもあったけど、
夜は注文を受けてから鰻を割いて蒸して焼く。
だから焼き上がるまでかなりの時間がかかりました。
その時間を、酒を飲みつつ待つというのが
たのしいお店であったのでしょう。
いついっても、おじさんたちがニコニコしながら
飲んでいた。
ルールがひとつありました。
お酒は２合を越えては売らぬというもの。
酔っぱらいは嫌いだから、というのが祖母のこだわりで、
けれどすべての人が２合目の徳利を
売ってもらえるかというとそうじゃなかった。
２合を越えて売らぬというのが目的ではなく、
酔っぱらいには酒を売らぬというのが
ルールの意味するところでありましたから、
祖母が「あなたは酔っぱらってる」と判断した人は
お酒のお替りにありつけない。
判断基準はとても簡単。
お箸を箸置きに置かぬ人。
器の箸にひっかけたり、
あるいは箸置きに置いても
そこから正しい所作で箸を持てぬ人は、
美しくない人と判断されて、今日はお酒を売りませんと。
だからか祖母のお店のおじさんたちは、
みんなニコニコ、背筋を伸ばして
お酒をたのしく飲んでいた。
小さなお店の中にいる、全ての人が同じように行儀よく、
たのしくそしてうつくしく
誰の邪魔もしないで食事をするステキ。
食べる「モノ」が好きなのでなく、
食べる「コト」が好きな人たちで満たされた
レストランって素敵だなぁ、
と子供ながらにボクは思った。
